AAPS – The Resource for Physicians Practicing In Medical Specialties
The American Association of Physician Specialists (AAPS) was formed in 1950 to provide physicians both a choice and a voice in board certification. In the early days, the options were limited for qualified physicians who wanted to pursue board certification and recertification, and the AAPS was founded to address a clear lack of options for qualified allopathic (MD) and osteopathic (DO) physicians. AAPS now focuses on education while its affiliated certifying body, the American Board of Physician Specialties, offers board certification through specialty member boards. Since those early days, the American Board of Physician Specialties grown to be the third largest, nationally recognized multi-specialty physician certifying body in the United States.
The mission of AAPS is to provide education and a structured platform for its affiliated academies of medicine. The AAPS:
- provides a forum for addressing issues of concern to physician specialists
- promotes collegiality, fraternity, and service amongst Academy members
- offers the distinguished Degree of Fellow through affiliated Academies of Medicine
- recognizes individuals for their contributions to AAPS, ABPS, and public health
- offers continuing medical education programs to meet the needs and interests of Academy members
- provides graduate medical training programs
- provides, enhances, and sustains physician-patient advocacy in all aspects of public health
