American Academy of Disaster Medicine Awards AADM Distinguished Service Award to Gregory Ciottone, MD, FACEP, FFSEM

Tampa, FL – Gregory Ciottone, MD, FACEP, FFSEM was recently awarded the 2020 AADM Distinguished Service Award by the American Academy of Disaster Medicine® (AADM®). The AADM Award recognizes the vital role physician specialists play in the disaster life cycle – preparation, planning, response, and recovery.

Because he exemplifies the goals and objectives of the AADM, Dr. Gregory Ciottone was selected for the award according to Academy President Lorraine Giordano, MD. “He has promoted the practice of disaster health care in order to ensure that all physicians and health care professionals are aware and prepared to effectively respond to disaster, be it natural or man-made,” said Dr. Giordano.

Dr. Ciottone has dedicated his career to the academic advancement of Disaster Medicine through a combination of field work, research, and scholarly activity. He is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School and an instructor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPHS).

Dr. Ciottone is the founder and director of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Fellowship in Disaster Medicine, the first of its kind at a Harvard teaching hospital. He also is the Medical Director for the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a joint program of the HSPHS and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Having taught educational programs in Disaster Medicine and Emergency Management in over 30 countries around the world, Dr. Ciottone has also consulted domestically for the US State Department, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, and the White House Medical Unit. He has written over 100 scholarly works, including the first and second edition of the leading textbook in the field, Ciottone’s Disaster Medicine.

“As President of WADEM, the World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ciottone is an acknowledged world leader on Disaster Medicine who has taught in over 30 countries and lectured extensively at international conferences,” Dr. Giordano said.

The American Academy of Disaster Medicine promotes the practice of disaster health care, ensuring that all physicians are aware and prepared to effectively respond to future disaster either natural or man-made. AADM is an affiliate academy of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc.® (AAPS), the governing body of the American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) that certifies both allopathic and osteopathic physicians in a variety of specialties including disaster medicine.
